When a Missing Drawer Became a Window

Sometimes the most meaningful pieces begin with what others believe is missing.

One afternoon, while driving through Houston on my way to an event, I noticed an old dresser sitting beside the road, waiting for bulk trash pickup.

It wasn't perfect. In fact, it was incomplete. The second drawer was gone.

Most people would have seen a broken dresser.

I saw beautiful aged wood, honest craftsmanship, and another story waiting to be told.

I smiled and kept driving.

As I often do, I quietly said to myself,

"If it's meant for me, it will still be here when I return."

Hours later, it was. So I brought it home.

At first, I imagined rebuilding the missing drawer and restoring it to its original form.

But restoration isn't always about recreating the past.

Sometimes it's about discovering a new purpose.

As I cleaned the wood and ran my hands across nearly a century of history, the dresser seemed to whisper a different idea.

Not another drawer... A stained glass portal.

The missing space wasn't a flaw. It was an opportunity for light.

That opening became a handcrafted stained glass landscape inspired by the African savanna

a sunrise, distant hills, acacia trees, and an elephant walking with its calf.

A story of journey. A story of family. A story of hope.

When the piece was finished, my mother saw it.

She immediately fell in love.

There wasn't a moment of hesitation.

I knew where it belonged.

Today, it lives in her home, where light continues to pass through the glass each day.

What was once waiting for a landfill became an heirloom once again.

That, to me, is preservation.

Not simply saving old furniture.

But giving beautiful craftsmanship another opportunity to serve, inspire, and remain part of a family's story.
